The Adams Unity Coalition20131109_140707 will host civil rights investigator and trainer Ann Van Dyke for a presentation on the activity of hate groups in Pennsylvania and how communities can take action on Thursday, Nov. 21, at 6:30 p.m. at the YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County, 909 Fairfield Rd., Gettysburg.

Van Dyke worked as a civil rights investigator and trainer for the Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission for 33 years, providing training on a broad range of civil rights issues to schools, higher education institutions, employers, municipalities, and police departments, as well as religious and citizen groups. She has been recognized for her work by the NAACP, the Dauphin County Bar Association, Harrisburg Area Community College, the United Church of Christ, the National Organization for Women, the YWCA Greater Harrisburg, and the U.S. Department of Justice. Since retiring from the PHRC in 2012, she has remained active in civil rights work through the YWCA Greater Harrisburg’s Anti-Racism Committee, the Community Responders Network, and other regional organizations.

Van Dyke’s presentation, entitled “The State of Hate in Pennsylvania…and the Good News,” will give an overview of hate group activity in the state and the reasons why it is important for community members to speak up when hate groups come to town. The session will include time for discussion about how all members of the community can take action to ensure that our community remains a place where unity and respect for others can thrive.

The session is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. For more information, email Ashley Andyshak Hayes at aahayes@ywcagettysburg.org or call 717-334-9171, ext. 113.
