The YWCA Gettysburg & Adams County will present the sixth annual Unity Walk on Friday, Sept. 27, at 5 p.m., beginning in front of the Gettysburg Train Station, 35 Carlisle St. The event is free and the public is invited to participate.
This year’s walk will follow the “Women Behind These Walls” tour of downtown Gettysburg, featuring seldom-shared stories of civilian women who lived before, during, and after the Civil War battle. The tour was developed this summer in a collaborative effort by the YWCA, Survivors, Inc., Licensed Battlefield Guide Linda Clark, Licensed Battlefield and Town Guide Joanne Lewis, and Deb McCauslin, director of For the Cause Productions. Tour groups will be led by Clark, Lewis and McCauslin, and the number of tour groups will depend on the number of participants. The tour route is approximately 3.2 miles.
The YWCA’s Unity Walks strive to share diverse perspectives of the area’s history and culture in an effort to help participants appreciate differences and become more accepting of others. The event is made possible by these generous sponsors: Gettysburg Pediatrics, Hull’s Electric Co., Inc., Adams Electric Cooperative, Inc., Comcast, Community Benefits Real Estate, Computer Works, Confederate Woods Veterinary Hospital, Eisenhower Hotel and Conference Center, Emmitsburg Veterinary Hospital, Gettysburg Diagnostic Imaging, Graphcom, Inc., Historic Gettysburg Hotel, Dr. Null, Seidel, and Dental Associates, Realty Leasing and Management Co., Susquehanna Bank, and Wellspan-Gettysburg Hospital.
